This is a British honor tobacco box, often found in pubs. Insert a halfpenny, push the plunger, and the other side pops open and you are on your honor to take just one pipeful of tobacco.
This is the only example we have ever seen with a maker�s name. George Earle worked in Hungerford from 1841 to 1871, as listed in Hungerford directories of the time. The box retains its original brass key. |
