This beautiful English silk on silk needlework was made around 1780-90. The subject is holding a letter that says "Sophia." We are not sure of the meaning of this, but Princess Sophia was the twelfth (!) child of George III. Sophia was also the goddess of wisdom. There are many other Sophias in mythology and history, so you may take your pick.
In excellent condition, in its original frame and glass, measuring 10" by 8" overall.
