A FINE PHILADELPHIA LOW-BACK CHAIR |
This form originated in Philadelphia and Newport, RI, in the mid 18th century and is among the most comfortable of all Windsor styles. This example, with its blunt arrow feet and carved saddle seat, is similar to a chair illustrated in The Windsor Style in America Vol. II p. 62, and dates from 1765-80. Traces of old red remain beneath a later black. |
