Here we have "The Experimental Philosopher" in the process of taking apart a fireplace bellows, no doubt to figure out how it worked. Various household objects are scattered on the floor, likely knocked over in his haste to get to the inner secrets of the bellows.
The plate is marked Dawson and is 6" in diameter. A raised border depicts cherubs riding lions and some other creatures, all painted in pink and blue enamels.
John Dawson & Co. worked between 1799–1837 in Sunderland, County Durham, England.
