We are calling this a "woollie" but only in a generic sense because the sailor who stitched this chose to use cotton thread rather than wool. He had a wonderful sense of the motion of the sea and the waves, as evidenced in the jacquard effect that he used to show the water. His sky is also quite fanciful, giving the impression of clouds and blue patches.
Made by a British sailor around mid 19th century. Great detailed work, and it rests in its original frame, measuring 22" by 17.5" overall. |
