This cut and paste silhouette was created by Philip Lord in Maine in 1835. Sadly, we do not know who the family was, but we do know that they lived in style, and were cultured. The details in the room are wonderful, and include a picture on the wall and a large vase of flowers, both highlighted with subtle watercolors.
Not much is known about Lord, except for the fact that he was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, in 1814, and lived until 1888. He was an itinerant artist, and traveled throughout New England cutting his silhouettes.
14" by 12". Dated 1835.
