Never before have we seen a sampler quite like this one. There is a lovely verse about "HOPE" that reads: Hope like the glimm'ring taper's light, / Adorns and cheers the way. / And still as darker grows the night, / Emits a brighter ray." Signed Jane Jackson, Aged 12, 1816.
Beneath the verse is a framed (by embroidery) panel depicgting a cottage and some foliage, with painted sky. This type of work is known as "printwork" as it is very fine stitching attempting to simulate a print.
It is in a somewhat later but lovely gold frame, and measures 16½" by 20½" overall.
