Like many European-made work talbes, this one is a combination sewing / writing stand. The interior features a removable section for thread, scissors, and other sewing implements, while the outer section of the interior has a place for pens and ink, and a felt-line writing surface with room behind it for writing paper. There are two secret compartments as well, which slipped right past our notice, but our cabinetmaker found them (he SAID there was nothing inside...).

It dates from the mid 19th century. It has simple and lovely ivory inlay as well as ivory knobs, and a remarkable carved base.
