Samplers like this one were used to teach girls how to darn. The teacher would tear a number of holes in a piece of fabric, and the girls would be required to darn the holes re-creating various fabric weaves. Thus, each cross section is somewhat different.
This was made in 1746, and is in good condition. It rests in a 19th century gold frame.
