SOLD Rare Silhouette by W Phelps |
This silhouette is by W Phelps, who worked on Drury Lane in London circa 1784-91. He either painted silhouettes on plaster, or cut them out and embellished them with color, and pasted them on a plaster background. Phelps was the only artist known to have worked in the latter fashion. This example is of a gentleman, and of particular note is the fact that the buttons on his coat are cut out separately and pasted on. In a period frame with eglomise, the frame measures 5 1/2" x 6 1/2." |
