This memorial is for Harriot Farrar of Boston, who died at age 10 in 1810. Her father, James Farrar, was a partner in French & Farrar, which was a wharf in Boston on Fish Street. And the business? Selling fish, of course! It measures 18 1/4" by 21" overall. The frame is period but not original. The piece has been backed with acid free and is properly spaced away from the glass. The needlework is based on Angelika Kauffman's famous painting of "Fame Decorating Shakespeare's Tomb" (c. 1772). This work (illustrated below) was a prototype for many memorial works produced by young women in schools both in the United States and in England. |
