An amazing 18th century paper filigree tea caddy.
An amazing 18th century paper filigree tea caddy.

This elongated hexagonal tea caddy was meticulously made by a young lady using narrow pieces of paper that she rolled up on a pin and then put into place to create beautiful designs. Her parents must have been so proud of it (and rightfully so!) that they had it encased in glass to preserve it.

We have never seen an example that showed landscapes, as this one does on the back side. There is also a miniature portrait of a mother and child, or maybe two siblings. Even looking through a magnifier, it is difficult to see whether it is painted on card or "the other material."

The images don't do it justice, as it was difficult to photograph with the glass, but you will get a good idea of its uniqueness. It dates c. 1780 and is 9" across.
