SOLD Margeret Griffiths 1819 Sunderland Jug
SOLD Margeret Griffiths 1819 Sunderland Jug

What a fine example of a Sunderland jug this is! It has a wonderful date of October 29, 1819, no doubt made for the birth of young Margeret. Above the date is a verse: "Distrust and darkness of a future state / Is that which makes mankind to dread their fate / Dying is nothing, but 'tis this we fear / To be we know not what, we know not where."

The reverse side has a wonderful transfer colored with enamels and the motto: "THat by the Plough would thrive / HIMSELF / must either hold or drive." The transfer shows many people doing the work of the farm, including ploughing, spinning, churning butter, milking the cow.

This piece is in excellent condition with only a bit of wear and one small chip on the spout. 4.75" tall.
