SOLD A French Penal Colony |
In the 19th century, the French had a well known Penal Colony on Devil's Island in French Guiana, and, not so well known, one in New Caledonia in Noumea. This unique polychrome carving depicts convicts, a guard, and a native at a "work party." The carving on a single plank of mahogany, is signed (upside down at the top) "DUCLOS"--most likely a prisoner there. This is not only an interesting piece of history, but a distinctive example of folk art at its best. 19.5" x 21.5". |
