SOLD Duke of York and Prince Coburg Prattware Jug
SOLD Duke of York and Prince Coburg Prattware Jug

This jug is pictured in Griselda Lewis' Book "Pratt Ware 1780-1840." She describes it as follows: "From 1793 to 1795 Frederick Augustus, Duke of York and Albany (1763-1827), second son of George III, commanded the British in Flanders. His contingent of 10,000 men was part of the army of Prince Josias of Saxe-Coburg. The Duke of York's popularity was due, not only to his ability as a soldier, though he did much for the army, but to the fact that he was a keen sportsman and was reputed to be a very amiable man and as compassionate a victor as was his commander. The Duke of York and Prince Coburg jugs were probably made to celebrate the victorious cammpaigns of 1793. There was less to celebrate the following year, when Prince Coburg, after the Austrian reverse at Fleurus, decided to evacuate the Netherlands and the Duke of York's troops fell back and embarked for home." Page 168 of the 1984 edition.

This jug stands 7½" tall and has had some professional restoration. The molding is crisp, and the underglaze painted areas are crisp and bright.
